Compassion in Action

Compassionate Houston

A Force for Good: Compassionate Houston in the Spotlight
Compassionate Houston, a vibrant 501(c)(3) nonprofit, embodies the spirit of the
Compassionate Cities Movement within the diverse tapestry of Greater Houston.
Founded in 2011 by Rev. Betty Adam and a dedicated team, Compassionate Houston
draws inspiration from the Charter for Compassion’s principles of respect, celebrating
cultural and religious diversity, and fostering empathy for all.
Compassionate Houston’s mission unfolds through four key aims:
– Equipping the community with compassion skills through educational
programs.
– Building bridges for collaborative solutions by fostering connections between
organizations.
– Promoting intercultural understanding to celebrate Houston’s rich cultural
mosaic.
– Recognizing compassionate leaders who inspire others.

Their network of over 30 partner organizations and a focus on the Greater Houston area
fuel their entirely volunteer-driven approach. The organization acts as a champion for
compassion, promoting partner initiatives alongside their own programs like
Compassion Week, Project Kindness, Compassion Through the Arts Initiative, seasonal
book studies, and compassion training workshops.
Compassionate Houston actively leverages CompassionateUSA’s resources. Board
members, volunteers, and even summer interns have taken the micro-course.
Leadership has enthusiastically promoted the course and video materials to their
extensive network, empowering others to embrace compassion. They have even
initiated discussions with Houston city officials, exploring possibilities for collaboration
and impactful campaigns.
Compassion is the cornerstone of Compassionate Houston’s values, naturally aligning
them with CompassionateUSA’s mission. They recognize the micro-course’s potential to
create a common language for community discussions and service projects. Its
inclusivity and accessibility resonate with their vision of a city woven together by
compassion.
Through their dedication and innovative approach, Compassionate Houston serves as a
shining example of the transformative power of compassion in action. Learn more about
